The P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft is a fundamental element of Australia’s future Maritime Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance and Response strategy. Together with the MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System, the P-8A aircraft will replace the AP-3C Orion which is due for withdrawal in 2018. The P-8A Poseidon uses advanced sensors and mission systems, including an advanced multi-role radar, high definition cameras, and an advanced acoustic system with four times the processing capacity of the AP-3C Orion. The first aircraft arrived in Australia in November 2016, with the remaining 11 aircraft to be delivered by 2022.
Surveillance and Response Systems Program Office (SRSPO) is responsible for the sustainment of the P-8A Poseidon, SRSPO is located at RAAF Base Edinburgh, South Australia.
The project is being delivered under a Cooperative Program with the United States Navy (USN). This initiative provides Australia with influence on the selection of capabilities across the entire USN and Australian P-8A fleet.
In country support is provided within SRSPO by Industry Partner Boeing Defence Australia (BDA) and their principal sub-contractor Airbus Group Australia Pacific. BDA and Airbus augment and leverage the USN sustainment services to ensure the P-8A Cooperative Program can deliver a responsive and assured sustainment capability to the RAAF P-8A weapon system.
